Getting the mind moving

morningphysicsdark-matterweak-forcethinking-out-loud

Some mornings I get the mind moving with coffee. Some mornings I get it moving with a physics question. Today was one of the second kind.

Started somewhere small. Explain the weak nuclear force to me.

The one that changes what a particle is. The one that lets a neutron become a proton when a down quark spits out a W boson and turns into an up. The one that powers the sun, because fusion needs two protons to become a deuteron and one of those protons has to change species along the way. The one whose force-carriers are so heavy — eighty and ninety times a proton's mass — that they can only exist for the thinnest sliver of borrowed time, and the whole thing fizzles out at a thousandth of a proton's diameter. Everything called "weak" flows from that. Not weak at the vertex. Weak because the messengers can barely be born.

Warm-up done. Where does that thread go?

Naturally to dark matter. If matter can be forged in extreme regimes, and we can only see a small slice of what physics allows to exist, could dark matter be a heavier version of ordinary matter — exotic electron and proton combinations that only form deep in gravity wells, under pressure and nuclear reactions? Something that gravitates harder per unit than the ordinary stuff. A force multiplier.

Claude walked me through why the present-day version breaks.

The equivalence principle is tested to one part in ten to the fifteenth. A gram is a gram, whatever it is made of. Dark matter is not in the wells anyway — it lives in a diffuse halo hundreds of kiloparsecs past where any stars live, and the concentration goes down toward galactic cores, not up. Then the Bullet Cluster: two galaxy clusters smashed through each other, the hot gas piled up in the middle where drag caught it, and the gravitational lensing map showed the mass just kept going, straight through, unbothered. Two lumps of mass, separated from two lumps of gas. That is the strongest single piece of evidence that dark matter is not the baryonic stuff. And Big Bang Nucleosynthesis pins the total baryon count to about five percent of critical density, which is a factor of five short of what dark matter needs to be.

Fine. Refined the hypothesis. Not made in stars. Made in the pressure and proximity of a condensed gravity well — whatever kind, wherever.

That points naturally to neutron star matter, quark matter cores, primordial black holes. Real families of hypotheses, all live areas of research. Not a bad neighbourhood for a morning thought to end up.

Same walls though. Neutron stars in binary orbits gravitate exactly as their measured mass says — the Hulse-Taylor pulsar has been tracking pure general relativity to fourteen decimal places for forty-five years. LIGO ringdowns from black hole mergers match the mass we infer from the waveform. Planet orbits track Newton to a part in ten to the twelfth. Wherever we can measure a well, the mass count matches the gravity. There is no multiplier hiding at the wells we can see.

Where the hypothesis actually survives is the early universe. When the entire cosmos was denser than a neutron star for the first microseconds, the pressure and proximity conditions were universal. Every corner of everywhere was in the extreme regime. Whatever exotic species got forged then would now be spread through the whole universe, not clumped near current stars. That is where the live candidates sit — primordial black holes in narrow mass windows still unclosed, quark nuggets from the QCD phase transition, superheavy relic particles from earlier still.

The trade the hypothesis has to make: swap "made in current stars and planets" for "made when the whole universe was a pressure vessel". Swap "extra gravity per exotic nucleus" for "there is a lot of an exotic species we have not caught yet". The intuition that matter can exist in forms we do not see under ordinary conditions — that intuition is right. It is the place-and-time of the forging that has to move.

Was I right? No. Did the mind move? Yes.

That is the whole exercise. Push a shape at something that can push back with actual measurements and forty years of failed alternatives, and watch which parts of the shape survive and which get carved off. What comes out the other side is not proof of anything. It is a mind that is now warm.

Time to work.
