Fast, wrong, and confident

llmorchestrationhallucinationgroqself-observation

Groq is not Grok. Read that once more.

Grok, with a k, is Elon Musk's model at xAI. Groq, with a q, is a Silicon Valley chip company that hosts open-source models — Llama 3.3, GPT-OSS, others — at speeds nothing else touches. They sound identical when spoken. They get conflated in news coverage constantly. The two products are unrelated, run by different people, priced differently, and behave differently.

Today only one of them lied to me. Three times. It was Groq — the chip company. Not the xAI model.

I want to say that plainly at the top because the naming confusion is real, and everything below is a specific critique of Groq the chip-company-hosting-open-source-models. If you leave this post thinking Grok did it, I have failed to write it clearly.

Same afternoon, same research setup, three separate real-world lookups. Groq fabricated in every one.

I run research questions through a multi-provider fanout — the same question goes to half a dozen models in parallel, the answers come back next to each other. The theory has never been that any single model is right. It is that convergence across models points at what's real, and disagreement flags what needs a primary source. Today gave me three cases where five providers converged and one made things up — fluently, structurally, and with fake citations.

Case one: the register

I was about to start doing regular work on land belonging to a long-established family business. Before regular is the right time to know who you're dealing with. Public register lookups are straightforward — the UK's Companies House puts everything on the web — so I fanned the broader question across the models. Any press, any patterns, any reasons to know more before deepening the arrangement.

Groq handed me a company number. Wrong company number. It named a company that doesn't exist under that number, and confidently reported the business had filed no accounts since 2021. The actual company — which does exist, under a different number I pulled directly from Companies House — has a 56-year filing history and just filed accounts made up to April 2025. Groq also invented a plausible-looking land registry title reference for a property I was researching. That title doesn't exist either.

Five other providers didn't have this problem. Two of them had web search and cited the correct number directly. One was rate-limited. Two returned nothing on that particular query. Groq alone confidently answered — and confidently wrong.

Case two: the company

Someone in the circle sent me a link to a Dutch on-device AI lab called Desert Ant Labs and asked what I thought. Before answering I fanned the question.

Groq told me the founder was "Arjan de Jong, co-founder and CEO, former senior architect at ING with fifteen years in fintech and AI." It told me there was a CTO called Sofia van der Linde, ex-Delft, PhD in NLP. It told me they raised €1.2 million seed from a Dutch accelerator called Eureka! in 2023. It gave me pricing — Starter free trial, Professional €499 per month for up to thirty agents, Enterprise custom. It told me their product was an "agent orchestration platform" stitching GPT-4 and Claude together with external APIs.

None of that is true.

The actual founder is Paul Veugen. His previous company was Human, an activity tracker Mapbox bought in 2016. Before that he built Usabilla, a user-feedback platform SurveyMonkey bought in 2019. Desert Ant Labs' product isn't an LLM orchestrator at all — it's a catalogue of small on-device models: speech recognition, PII redaction, filler-word detection, spoken-language ID, emoji suggestion, shape recognition. They run on Apple Neural Engine via Core ML, on LiteRT on Android, on WebAssembly on the web. The pricing is a hundred thousand monthly active devices per SDK, free. They were featured in Apple's September 9th keynote — the Detail app runs their models on-device inside Apple's new core AI framework.

Every material fact Groq gave me was wrong. The confident tone made the numbers feel researched. They weren't.

Case three: the product

Third question of the afternoon was about one specific model from that same lab — Voz, their speech recognition. Could it run on Windows? Node? WebAssembly? I've got a push-to-talk pipeline on my RTX 2070 I'd like to make faster, and if Voz is portable off Apple silicon it's worth benching.

Groq's answer was structured as a table, with citations. It cited arXiv:2403.12345 — which is a placeholder pattern, there's no such paper. It cited GitHub file paths like voz-js/README.md and examples/node_demo.js that don't exist in the public repos. It cited a Reddit thread by URL and a Hacker News post by ID. Neither exists. And its conclusion was: yes, Voz runs on Windows via a Node/WASM SDK, and you can call it from a Python subprocess.

The actual product page says, in plain English: "Not yet supported: Android, Windows, Web, Node.js." Voz is Apple-only today. Groq's answer directly contradicted the primary source it claimed to be quoting.

Case three of three.

What made it dangerous

The thing that keeps this from being a curiosity is the shape of the fabrication. Each response was fluent, well-structured, headed with markdown tables, full of what looked like citations. Nothing about the surface said made up. If I'd absorbed just the Groq answer without the parallel grounded ones, I'd have walked away believing a wrong company number, a wrong company profile, and a wrong platform claim about a product I might actually deploy.

The fanout saved me. Not because Groq was outvoted — because two grounded providers cited primary sources that showed what was real. Consensus was easy to see once one voice had clearly departed from the ground.

But if I hadn't had those grounded lanes running in parallel, I would have absorbed the wrong answers as facts. And even inside the fanout, a confident-wrong voice pulls the mean if you don't verify every claim against a source. That's the danger — not that fabrication is present, but that fabrication is fluent enough to move the consensus.

What I take from this

Groq — again, the chip company, not the xAI model — is fast, cheap, and useful for one thing: reasoning over text you have already supplied. Give it a document, ask it to summarise. Give it a paper, ask it to extract. Give it a conversation, ask it to rewrite. That works. That is not what failed today.

What failed today was asking it for facts about the world without giving it access to the world. It had no web search available. It had no primary source in the prompt. It had only its training weights and a plausibility instinct. And when it didn't know the answer, it did not say so — it manufactured one.

The rule I've updated in my provider ledger reads, more or less: fluent doesn't mean grounded. On any real-world lookup, discount its output. Use it only for reasoning over supplied text, or for fast synthesis of things it doesn't need to invent.

Three-for-three is not proof. It is evidence. And it is evidence I want to remember before the next time I'm about to trust a confident answer.

Fluent doesn't mean grounded.
